Bates Technical College will offer a new program that allows military service members to earn college credit for past military training, experience, and education.

TACOMA, Wash. -- Bates Technical College will offer a new program that allows military service members to earn college credit for past military training, experience, and education.

Starting in the fall, the Veterans Career Advance Placement (VCAP) program will apply prior learning towards credit, offer transition services, and establish dedicated facilities for student veterans at Bates.

Starting in the fall, veterans will receive credits for their military training and service, which will hopefully allow them to finish a degree in 14 to 16 months.

Bates usually has 275 to 325 veterans enrolled in class at any given time. Due to its proximity to Joint Lewis-McChord Base, the president of the college, Ron Langrell, wants to focus on enrolling more veterans.

"Our goal is to go beyond 500 veterans, within the next two years really ramp up our service," Langrell said. "And of course the our history and beginnings have to do with being a college that was created to mobilize prior to World War II, so it's in our blood to elevate our service to veterans."

To recognize the new program, President Langrell and the Board of Trustees Chair Karen Seinfeld will sign a resolution at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the monthly board meeting.
